SUPPORT THE SANIBEL TRAILS IN MOTION FUND

Sanibel’s 23-mile Shared-Use Path System, frequently referred to as one of the “crown jewels” of the Island, is a unique recreational resource and also provides residents and visitors with an important non-motorized transportation option for getting around the Island.  The Sanibel Trails In Motion Fund supports the path system.

Purpose of the Fund:
The Sanibel Trails In Motion Fund was started by the Sanibel Bicycle Club with two key goals:

To become a catalyst for action by providing funds to support projects that improve Sanibel’s Shared-Use Path System and its associated amenities.
To provide a tax-deductible mechanism for residents and visitors on Sanibel and Captiva to support a safe, well-maintained Shared-Use Path System.

Accomplishments:
In 2005, the Sanibel Trails In Motion Fund joined with the City of Sanibel to fund development of a Master Plan for the Shared-Use Path System.  The Master Plan was adopted by the City Council in April 2009.

In 2011, Sanibel Trails In Motion contributed funds to the City of Sanibel that allowed construction of an extension of the path system on the west end of Sanibel from Pine Avenue to the Blind Pass bridge.  This extension removed a safety hazard for walkers and cyclists using the path to reach Turner Beach or to go to Captiva Island.  This was the first new path on Sanibel since 1996.

During the 2011-2012 season, Sanibel Trails in Motion was the major funding source for the construction of a Path Information Center that is located alongside of Periwinkle Way between the Shell Shop and Huxter's. The facility has rest amenities including shade, drinking fountain and benches; and includes signage providing information regarding local ecology, the Rutland historical home site, path system maps and directions to Island locations.

In 2015, Sanibel Trails In Motion Fund helped fund the production of a video entitled "Cycling on Sanibel" designed to promote safer cycling on Sanibel and to educate visitors regarding the ins and outs of riding on the shared use path system.

Future Projects:
Several projects that would improve the safety and enhance the experience of path users were identified in the Master Plan, including path widening in certain areas, path extensions, wayfinding signage, and rest areas.  Sanibel Trails In Motion Fund resources will be used as leverage to help accomplish these path improvements, combined with funds from other sources such as City budgets, private partnerships and grants from foundations and federal and state entities.
