Ding Darling (meet in parking lot nearest to Sanibel School)
We’re bringing back the midweek rides this season, with a new time (8 am) and a new start location (Ding Darling). If you’d like to visit the western end - or even Captiva - but aren’t always up to that stretch from Periwinkle, this is your opportunity to explore new territory. As on Saturdays, distances and paces will depend on the interests and abilities of those who attend each ride.
This popular ride is back in business for the 2023-24 season! Different distance options from 10-22 miles, with groups based on varying paces. At this time, most of the shared-use paths are clear, but please be prepared for any unexpected debris. Click on the event title for more details.
All riders are invited to meet at the Sanibel Deli & Coffee Factory (2330 Palm Ridge Rd, across from the fire station) for post-ride coffee, breakfast, and camaraderie. Helmets are required, and if you are not a current SBC member, you will need to sign a waiver of liability.

Cape Haze Pioneer Trail Park
Cape Haze Pioneer Trail Head is a small park off Rt. 776, about an hour and a half from Sanibel via 75 in western Charlotte. Path is mostly new, wide, and smooth. I believe there are restrooms at this park. Meet at trail head 9:45a for 10 am rollout.
At about 8miles riding southwest on path, near Gasparilla Marina, it becomes a wide shoulder lane on Gasparilla Road (keep heading SW). After about a half mile on bike shoulder lane, take left turn on Boca Grande Causeway heading south (the only way onto the island). There is $3 bike toll at Boca Grande Causeway. Cross bridges on the 4 ft. bike lane onto the island of Gasparilla and the town of Boca Grande. After bridges, the bike lane enters Boca and becomes a path on LEFT (east) side of the main road at Gulf Shores Drive intersection (Cross to east side here). This is the trail you may be familiar with from our boat/bike trips to the island. There are several crossings for perpendicular streets with stop signs, so be aware. Motorists are generally cooperative--except for red pick-up trucks. Path proceeds about 3 miles into the main town. Total one-way distance is about 14 miles.
We will have lunch at Miller‘s Dockside Miller‘s Dockside at 11:30 am. To get there, stay on bike path through downtown until you reach 1st Street. Turn left, and ride about 1000 ft. to restaurant on water. They do not take reservations but are expecting our group of estimated 15 people. It‘s important that you arrive by 11:30 to avoid waiting in separate queue. Return same way at 1p, arriving trail head park about 2:30p.
Note: this schedule assumes a ride pace of about 9.5 mph. If you do not want to ride at that pace, plan to leave the park a bit earlier, but please let me know so we can account for all riders at lunch. My number is 314-406-0904. If I crash and die, you can also reach Paul Burke at 734-834-4395.
